Ministries and Departments
Government agencies at National level, Region/State level, District level, Township level and Village Tract level have been the keys actors and actively engaged in undertaking DRR functions and responsibilities. At central level, line Ministries and Departments have led specific DRR tasks as per their mandate to translate national policy into actual implementation.
The Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement (MSWRR) is the nodal ministry responsible for the country wide DRR. The ministry comprises of three departments namely Relief and Resettlement Department, Fire Services Department and Department of Social Welfare.
Relief and Resettlement Department (RRD) is the nodal department to undertake DRR activities and initiatives as per the national and ministerial policy and plan on DRR. RRD led the development of Myanmar Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction (MAPDRR), and is the DRR technical agency responsible for enhancing necessary knowledge and skills on DRR of government agencies at all level and educate people on matters related to DRR. It has mandate to provide relief for victims of natural disasters to ease their sufferings and take precautionary steps so as to minimize loss of lives and property of the victims of natural disasters.
On sectoral DRR issues, many ministries and departments have undertaken various initiatives; some of the ministries include Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development and Ministry of Transport. .
