Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

   Various entities in Myanmar are active in GIS. A group was established in 2009 for information sharing on GIS activities. The Group holds regular meetings to provide a forum for the exchange of information on upcoming studies, database tools, remote sensing analysis and any relevant activity.

   The GIS Group encourages agencies to share experiences on how their data is processed, analyzed and disseminated and to exchange their data and/or final products. The GIS Group provides summary information on which data is available and where. The GIS Group does not seek to centralize data but would rather be a source of ‘information on information’, which can help direct interested parties to the agency where specific data is held.

   The GIS Group seeks to reach a common understanding on Place Codes, projections and basic geographic layers so as to facilitate easy exchange of data between participating organizations.
