Education in Emergencies
The national Education in Emergencies sector comprises civil society organizations, national and international NGOs, and UN agencies working to support quality, inclusive education for children in Myanmar affected by crisis. It is co-led by UNICEF and Save the Children. In 2012, the overarching Education Thematic Working Group (ETWG) initially took responsibility for the coordination of the educational aspects of the Emergency response, but in May 2013 a more formalized coordination mechanism, the national Education in Emergencies (EiE) Sector, was established as part of the Humanitarian Coordination Structures. The EiE Sector is a member of the Inter-Cluster Coordination Group (ICCG) supporting the Humanitarian Coordination Team (HCT). Sub-national EiE Sector Coordination is also active in Myitkyina (serving Kachin), Sittwe (serving Rakhine State) and Lashio (serving Shan State).
The overall aim of the Education in Emergencies (EiE) Sector in Myanmar is to support the coordination of a timely, coherent and effective education response by mobilizing and coordinating stakeholders to respond strategically to the three main ongoing humanitarian crises in Myanmar – Rakhine, Kachin, and Shan States – and to support preparedness capacity to effectively respond to human-made or natural hazards resulting in new disasters.
